St Malachy’s were again the cuairteoirí (visitors) to Tannaghmore Gardens on Tuesday evening for the start of Craobh Shóisear Ard Mhacha (the Armagh Junior Championship).
The Portadown side and current holders of the Armagh Junior Championship hit the opening score of the evening, but the home side settled with 4 quick cúiliíní (points) in as many minutes, 3 for Anthony Carville and one for Conor Carabine. St Malachy’s pulled one back before Anthony Carville sent over another poc saor (free) 15 minutes into the half. St Malachy’s replied with a converted free of their own before Patrick Kane and Adam Lennon got on an scórchlár (the scoreboard). Two points for Port an Dúnáin either side of a good effort from Paddy Kane kept the visitors in touch, but a strong críoch (finish) to the half saw Conor Carabine fire over from play and three converted frees from Anthony Carville gave the home side a 0-12 to 0-8 farasbarr (advantage) at leath ama (half time).
Carville opened the scoring in the dara leath (second half) but it was quickly cancelled out by a score from play for St Mals. Three quick scores from the foireann baile (home side) pushed them out in front but St Malachy’s kept the scoreboard ticking at the other end. Another couple of converted Carville frees were followed up by a great cúilín (point) from Carabine and a further 3 left the score 0-22 to 0-11 with 7 minutes to play. However, the visitors went on the attack with 1-3 in succession, with St Malachy’s John Monaghan hitting the eangach (net) for the game’s only goal. However, the hosts didn’t panic and scores from Conor Carabine and Tam McKavanagh with his third of the half wrapped up a good opening day win for the Treacys on a scoreline of 0-24 to 1-14.
Míle buíochas to the réiteoir (referee) Kieran Rice, to our matchday volunteers and to the St Malachy’s team and management for making the journey over to Tannaghmore Gardens arís eile. Míle buíochas to our loyal lucht tacaíochta (supporters) as well, it was great to hear a vocal support getting behind the team. The seniors are back in championship action next week with an away game to Cú Chulainn’s of Armagh at Sherry’s Field.
