The seniors were back in action ar maidin inné (yesterday morning) at Tannaghmore Gardens with Sleacht Néill making the journey from contae Dhoire (county Derry).
Tam McKavanagh marked his return to the team with an early cúilín (point) but it was soon cancelled out by the freasúra (opposition). Anthony Carville converted a 65 before the cuairteoirí (visitors) hit 2-2 within 5 minutes. We did pull a goal back with Kane Laverty finishing, but a further 2 from the Slaughtneil men pushed them further ahead. Anthony Carville got another before the visitors got their tríú cúl (third goal) with five minutes to the half time sos (break). Points were traded with Anthony Carville hitting over a free for the home side.
Sleacht Néill got the opening score of the second half, but the home side pulled two back with a lovely iarracht (effort) from Paddy Kane and Kane Laverty. However, another goal at the other end followed up by two points gave the visitors a 10 point lead with 15 bomaite (minutes) to go. However, Sean Treacys kept battling and a couple of pointed frees from Carville and one from play from Kane Laverty kept their hopes alive. With just two minutes to go Anthony Carville reduced the gap to cúig (five) with a well-taken cúl (goal) and two minutes into injury time, he got a second leaving just two between them. Another ionsaí (attack) by the home side saw the ball float over the bar, but the resulting puck out was the final play of the game with Sleacht Néill just about holding on for a one point win.
Comhghairdeas le Sleacht Néill but well done to our own team on a good battling second half performance. Thanks to the réiteoir Kieran Rice and to our young volunteer maoir cúil (umpires). This Tuesday sees the start of the Armagh league, but we have a bye for week one with our first game on Tuesday 19 Bealtaine (May) at home to Craobh Rua.
