Last night saw the start of our McCormick Cup campaign with a home tie against last year’s county junior champions St Malachy’s from Port an Dúnáin.
The cuairteoirí (visitors) got off to a better start hitting the first three cúilín. Thomas McMorrow opened the Sean Treacy’s account after 12 minutes, a score that was followed up by a poc saor (free) from Anthony Carville. Both sides hit a score from play, with the cúilín (point) for Seán Ó Treasaigh coming from Anthony Carville. A couple of dead ball efforts from St Malachy’s increased their lead. Anthony Carville was again on target from a free on 25 minutes, but our comharsana (neighbours) finished the half strongly with two more converted frees to leave the scores at 0-4 to 0-8 in favour of St Malachy’s at leath ama (half time).
The second half had just got underway when Anthony Carville got the first point of the half coming from a free. The home side were dependant on frees from Carville to keep them in touch throughout the dara leath (second half) with pointed frees from St Malachy’s Joe McKeever maintaining the visitors’ advantage. The Treacys managed to gain momentum half way through the half with three in a row from Carville and a good move from the home side was finished to the net by Tam McKavanagh to give the Tracey’s the lead for the first time on the 23rd bomaite (minute). A pointed free from St Malachy’s cut the gap to one but a good score from Adam Lennon ensured the win for the home side.
The seniors are back in action on Sunday in the Ulster League with a home tie against Eoghan Rua from Dún Geanainn (Dungannon), the 2nd of 3 consecutive home games for us. Hope to see you at Tannaghmore Gardens!
