Our senior hurlers were back in action yesterday in the craobh idirmheánach (Intermediate championship) up in Derrynoose were they faced Cill Shléibhe (Killeavy) in a tight affair.
Killeavy got the first score of the game after five minutes from a poc saor (free) which was immediately cancelled out by a poc saor from Conor Carabine. Killeavy hit two more but Carabine again responded from the dead ball before Anthony Carvill finished to the net after 16 minutes for the opening cúl (goal) of the game. The Sean Treacy’s cosaint (defence) stood tall as they repelled plenty of Killeavy attacks but a couple of converted frees had the sides level with half time approaching. However, the Seán Ó Treasaigh lads went into the seomra feistis (dressing room) at half time the ha pier side after a long range effort from Kane Laverty went straight to the net, as the unfotunate Killeavy goalkeeper tripped as he scrambled back to his goal line.
Cill Shléibhe regrouped at half time and made the better start hitting four consecutive scores including three from pocanna saora (frees). Sean Treacys were struggling to get on the scoreboard with a number of efforts to each side of the cuaille (goal post) before Anthony Carville got a point from play after 18 minutes of the half had been played. The south Armagh men from Cill Shléibhe however finished strong and hit another four points to give them the bua (victory) on a scoreline of 2-3 to 0-13.
While the Sean Treacys imreoirí (players) may be disappointed having exited the Armagh championship, they can look back on yesterday’s game with some pride having battled hard and giving their all. Míle buíochas leis na h-imreoirí as a n-iarrachtaí i sraith agus i gcraobh Ard Mhacha. Thank you very much to the players and the management for all of their efforts in the Armagh league and championship this year.
